MTS - Musical Tourette' Syndrome

What is MTS - Who is Affected - When will it strike - What can be done about MTS

Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder discovered by Georges Gilles de la Tourette. It is characterized by tics - Motor and sometimes vocal in nature. These tics occur throughout the day in "bouts".

Georges de Muse, distant relative of the man responsible for this diagnosis, has found a new variant to TS.  Musical Tourette's Syndrome, or MTS is a more common ailment. MTS was catalogued in 2003 when Georges observed that the "tics" came out in people after introduced to a word or phrase. This would in turn would make the person break out in song, sometimes uncontrollably.

Georges first noticed this variant at a local pub. Participants would get up for "Karaoke" to sing their favorite songs. Afterwards, Georges observed that the non-singers would be more easily susceptible to MTS stimulation.

He ran a test in where he put 3 people in separate rooms. The first person had access to music. The second had access to television. The third would receive no audio / visualization stimulation.

After 3 days when Georges entered the "quiet" cell, he found that the participant showed several signs of MTS. Part of the conversation went like this:

Georges: How do you feel?

Test subject: (singing) Sometimes I feel I've got to (slams twice on the table) get away.

Georges: Are you hungry?

Test subject: Give me feul, give me fire, give me that which I desire.

Georges: Picture....

Test subject: (singing) yourself on a boat by a river, with Tangerine trees and Marmalade skies.

Georges discovered that lack of stimulation would cause the "tic" to surface. He ran more tests to see if the results were the same. Sometimes test subjects would come out of a "stimulation" room and act the same way, but for the most part the quiet room always produced MTS.

Today, those results are facts in the fight against MTS. Scientists and Psychologists have taken de Muse' readings and expounded it to a new level.

The facts are this: approximately 70% of the population has a form of MTS. MTS usually is found in musicians and people who listen to large amounts of music. MTS is triggered when the subject is exposed to a stressful or uncomfortable situation. Many people with MTS show signs of ADD or ADHD just like in cases with TS.

Right now there are no solutions to cure MTS. Awareness has just begun, so it is being treated as thought the patient had TS. But strides are being made daily at MTS is researched. Someday a full cure will be found.
